TERNE-COATED STEEL AT ST. MARTINS

At St Martin’s Church, North Perrott, thieves have visited this church on ten occasions and systematically removed all the lead roofing on the North and South Transept, Organ Chamber, Turret and the Nave.

To stop this happening again, the PCC decided to fit terne-coated stainless steel standing seam roofing.

The terne-coated stainless steel is a very tough product with a very long lifespan of 100 years plus. It is very hard to remove and has a very low recycling cost and therefore not worth stealing.

The “terne” coating is a mixture of zinc and tin, and will tone down over a couple of years and take on the appearance of lead or zinc.
